Weekend Wonder #2

It’s Weekend Wonder!

A great opportunity to ask questions and share knowledge about the “biz”, items you have found, or reselling in general.

The Late Night Market Facebook page will have a post where you can join the thread AND this Late Night Coffee blog will have the comments section below open as a place to converse.

Last weekend ,we had some great information about international selling here on the blog. Really great insights if that has been something you have been thinking about. On the Late Night Market Facebook page, there was a discussion about storage ideas. Thank you all for your contributions!

Please feel free to ask and share! We all learn from each other!

Okay. I love this reselling. It’s the perfect job for me. There’s just one thing (besides finding room for all the stuff). I’m wondering if you all feel the same. There is this stigma….’the junk dealer’. I feel it when I’m shopping at the thrift and make a big haul. I feel it when people ask me what I’m doing now (I lost my regular job recently). I try not feel this way but it still gets me. I recognize resellers now when I see them. They are the ones who look at a vase and whip it over to see if it has a mark 🙂 That’s me too now. And some of them….days unshaven, dirty clothes…..I feel so mean now. But really I’ve got to admit I haven’t shaved my legs in two week!

    • I would be lying if I said I never have felt I needed to “explain” my job to some people I have met. I did this more when all the “cool junkin’ TV shows” weren’t on…..kinda like “I was junkin’….when junkin’ wasn’t cooooool…”. Now, most of the time, I don’t care what people think of me.

I set my own hours. I get to shop for a living. I “treasure hunt” for my job. And with the exception of a few frustrating customers, its pretty low stress. And I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE everything about it. Not too many people can say that about their job.

Yes…it’s true. I don’t wear the latest fashion…but I never really have. I look at an advantage to my job is that I don’t have to get “dressed up”….and I enjoy that aspect.

If it makes you feel better…I have found a job/hobby that gets more disdain from people. And that is metal detecting. Wow. The looks and snide comments from innocently taking a metal detector to a park or beach far exceeds any that I got from being knee-deep in a trash pile pulling out vintage stuff. Go figure.

You aren’t alone in your thoughts Nancy….and once you find that “million dollar item”…..it won’t even matter. 🙂

By the way my brother and sister in law are metal detectors aficionados too 🙂 There must be some genetics at work here. I guess I should expect to feel that urge at some point.

Although uncomfortable at times to be a reseller I don’t know any other occupation with such a great community of people like you and others I’ve seen around the internet, helping each other, supporting each other. That makes up for anyone giving me a sideways look 😉

I just got back from an auction. There were items collected from traveling all over the world; some very unique and interesting pieces. I would rather buy something that is different than go to a store and pick up a lamp that looks like 6 others on the shelf. If that is the style that appeals to you, that’s fine, since I feel it is wrong to judge, but it goes both ways. I am happy that other people don’t want or see the potential in the things I do since that means I can get what I want. I know some people would never dumpster dive or dig through dirty boxes, but glass and ceramic clean up with soap and water and are as good as new. To each their own and live and let live has got to be our motto.

Now THERE is a ready made t-shirt logo !

  4. Oh my goodness, my dad has the metal detector bug, big time. You ladies are on to something with this genetics thing. 🙂

I used to have an old Garrett Metal detector but sold it as I would get so over zealous looking for treasure and it was really a very heavy machine did a number on my back and shoulders…so sold it but recently went through some of my old sterling silver and gold pieces and sold my castoff’s for a nice sum it is really addictive using a metal detector and hope to replace one soon which would be much lighter….
