The following are tips that can help you minimize the work, gain more time for yourself, and still get the same results with your reselling business:
1) Incorporate some of the tips that were given in the previous articles about “Smart Reselling”. Each of these topics suggested ways to help your business run smoother and more efficiently, which should in turn, free up some time for you.
2) Make a schedule….and do your best to stick to it. This business can easily become 24/7. Establishing a starting time, daily job schedule for the weekdays, and an ending time will help you stay on task and at the end of your day, have a sense of completion. It should also give you some substantial time daily for yourself that has nothing to do with the business. When I first started this business, I had no schedule. At first it was fine, but then it got frustrating because it became the “job with no end”. Making a schedule saved me from suffering “burnout”.
3) Work at your best time. If you work best in the morning, give yourself the bulk of the workload at that time. Night owl? Save it for later in the evening. One of the best things in this business is its flexibility, so use it to your advantage. I’m a morning person, so all my hard or “not so fun” tasks are done usually by noon. After that, my energy gets lower and mistakes get higher. And I do my best to adhere to my 5:00 pm “quittin’ time”. I can keep working if I want, but I don’t give myself a guilt trip for stopping.
4) Use “factory” thinking. Even if you sell many different kinds of items, grouping the work that needs to be done into “like” batches can definitely speed up your progress through the day. Think “assembly line” when checking/writing emails , packaging your sold items, listing similar items , cleaning/repairing inventory, etc. The more you can group tasks, the better your brain can work to speed up as the repetition continues in each activity. I try pick “like” items to list everyday and it cuts my time down at the computer drastically.
5) Think amount…as in dollar. Instead of trying to list “x” number of items a day, try listing “x” number of dollars a day. Set a dollar amount that helps you reach your profit goals and that is realistic for you. This will also help you choose items more carefully for your inventory. Many people in this business say “It takes just as long to list an expensive item as an inexpensive one.” And for the most part….that’s usually true.
The reselling business has many unique attributes and can be quite enjoyable. But in the end, it’s still just a job. And jobs are meant to help our lives, not all-encompass them. Finding ways to free up your time and still run an effective business will help you( and ultimately your business) be more successful.
